How to Save Money On Gas
Owning a vehicle isn’t cheap. And with the constantly increasing cost of gas, it gets more expensive to drive a car everyday. That’s why we’ve compiled some of our favorite ways to save gas – in no particular order – to help save you up to 20% or more on the cost of gas.
Keep Your Vehicle Tuned Up
When your vehicle is properly maintained and tuned up, you can improve gas mileage by about 4%. You can save the same amount of gas by keeping your tires properly inflated as well. About one in four cars are driving on tires that are deflated by about 7.5 pounds, which can cause a loss of about 3% in fuel efficiency. While you’re at it, make sure the tires are properly aligned to improve vehicle performance and save about 10% on gas.
Replace Your Filters and Gas Cap
Replace any dirty or clogged air filters to improve gas mileage by about 10%. You can also lose significant fuel mileage with a broken or missing gas cap. The escaping fumes can also lead to air pollution and harm the environment.
Slow Down
Speeding is both dangerous and costly. For each 5 mph over 50 mph, you are paying about an extra $0.25 per gallon on gas. So slow down and reduce fuel consumption by about 7% for every 5 mph you reduce your speed.
Drive Safely
Driving more smoothly can also save you up to 1/3 on your gas bill. That’s because jerky driving and sudden stops can lower gas mileage by up to 33% on the highway and 5% in the city. Riding with your foot on the brake pedal will cost you more on unnecessary repairs and can increase gas consumption by up to 35%.
Consolidate Trips and Avoid Heavy Loads
Several short trips can use twice as much gas as one long trip, so start consolidating errands into one longer outing. Keep the load in your car light as an extra 100 pounds in your car can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 2%.
Consider Alternative Options
Why not ride a bike or public transportation? The less you drive, the more money you’ll save. As an added bonus, you’ll also get some extra exercise in the process and with the eco-friendly option, you can feel good about your contribution to the environment.
Sell Your Old Gas-Guzzler
Did you know that older cars will naturally waste more gas? If you have a gas-guzzling SUV, or your old vehicle is just wasting too much gas, then it might be time to trade it in for something with better gas mileage.
